Excerpts from 50th Anniversary 1931-1981
by Florence Carlson

Elim was organized on Wednesday, Nov 11, 1931, with 23 Charter Members and their children. Services were held in the shoolhouse every Sunday for two years. During this time plans were going forward for a church building. The present site was purchased for a sum of $75 from Nels Olson. An abandoned church building was given to the group and the men of the church tore it down, brought the usable materials to the site, and the present building was erected. The first pews were built by Pastor Rueben Johnson in 1942. Current pews were acquired from a church in Superior. In 1947 electric lights were installed. In the 1950s a basement was added. We remember with gratitude all those who have been instrumental in carrying on the work of the church over the years.

Over the past 29 years Pastor John Sippola served congregations in Moose Lake (St. Peters) / Barnum (Immanuel), developed a mission congregation in Eden Prairie (Prairie Lutheran - ELCA), served as director of pastoral care at Miller Dwan Medical Center from 1980 – 1994 and at Gloria Dei from 1994. From 1979 - 2000 he served as a chaplain in the Minnesota Army National Guard and was Minnesota State Family Assistance chaplain the last three years of his tour.  Carlene has worked for 20 years at Whole Person Associates, a company that publishes training materials in the field of health and wellness. She also worked at Pfeifer Hamilton, a company that published mostly regional books. She recently (December of 2003) became the owner of Whole Person Associates.
